Lap Band surgery is on the rise and no longer only available for just the severely obese. It’s been available in the U.S. for almost ten years now and is one of the less invasive types of surgeries for weight reduction. Complications can be less significant with this procedure do to the fact that it is reversible. Recovery times can be faster, resulting in less time spent in the hospital.

Lap band surgery is a procedure where an adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, reducing the size of the opening, which then creates a smaller food pocket at the top of the stomach. The band itself is a hollow ring that is filled with a saline solution. It is adjustable and has the ability to make the opening larger or smaller.

By reducing the opening in the stomach, food consumption is reduced and digestion is slowed down. The patient experiences less feelings of hunger and fullness after a much smaller amount of food.

One of the benefits of the adjustable band is to let in more or less food depending on the progress that the patient is making.

Adjustment of the band after surgery is easy to do and painless. While in surgery, the physician installed an access port just beneath the skin connected to the gastric band with tubing. When desiring to adjust the amount of saline in the band, the physician need only add or remove saline with the use of a small needle. This is a feature unique to lap band surgery.

This surgery can be done laparoscopically, which removes the need to make large incisions, that can cause scars. Small incisions are made, then cameras are put through tubes that are inserted into the body cavity. Selecting the proper area, the surgeon puts the band around the stomach, forming the ring, and locks it in place.

Then the access port is fastened and the small incisions are closed up. The saline solution is introduced forming the opening in the now, smaller stomach. This surgery is also fully reversible by the removal the band.

Lap band surgery is a minimally invasive surgery to help in weight reduction. As with all surgeries, proper consideration by the patient and physician should be determined if surgery is the best option.
